Determinants of finescale homogenization and differentiation of native freshwater fish faunas in a Mediterranean Basin: implications for conservation

چکیده
Aim Increasing threats to freshwater biodiversity are rapidly changing the distinctiveness of regional species pools and local assemblages. Biotic homogenization/differentiation processes are threatening the integrity and persistence of native biodiversity patterns at a range of spatial scales and pose a challenge for effective conservation planning. Here, we evaluate the extent and determinants of fine-scale alteration in native freshwater fish assemblages among stream reaches throughout a large river basin and consider the implications of these changes for the long-term conservation of native fishes.

Hemiculter leucisculus (Basilewsky, 1855) and Alburnus caeruleus Heckel, 1843: new data on their distributions in Iran
This paper provides information on the geographic distributions of two cyprinid species: Hemiculter leucisculus (Basilewsky, 1855) and Alburnus caeruleus Heckel, 1843, in the world and the entire drainage systems in Iran. The new distribution records were taken from Maroon River (Jarrahi River system) and Chardaval River (Karkheh river system), both in Tigris River basin showing wide and narrow...
متن کاملHomogenization patterns of the world's freshwater fish faunas.
The world is currently undergoing an unprecedented decline in biodiversity, which is mainly attributable to human activities. For instance, nonnative species introduction, combined with the extirpation of native species, affects biodiversity patterns, notably by increasing the similarity among species assemblages. This biodiversity change, called taxonomic homogenization, has rarely been assess...
متن کاملHomogenization, Differentiation, and the Widespread Alteration of Fish Faunas
—Widespread introduction of common species coupled with extirpation of endemic species can cause fish assemblages to lose much of their regional uniqueness. This process of biotic homogenization contrasts with biotic differentiation, whereby initially similar fish faunas diverge due to introductions of different species. The relative importance of homogenization and differentiation in altering ...
متن کاملEcological Processes Driving Biotic Homogenization: Testing a Mechanistic Model Using Fish Faunas
Biotic homogenization, the process of gradual replacement of native biotas by nonindigeous and locally expanding nonnative species, is rapidly diminishing the regional distinctiveness of global terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Although the empirical study of biotic homogenization is substantial and growing, the mechanisms underlying its dynamics remain poorly understood. We recently develope...
متن کاملFishes of the Cheshmeh Gomban wetlands (Kor River Basin), Fars Province: Biodiversity and their conservation threats
Fars Province in southern Iran includes the main basins of the Kor River, Maharloo Lake, Persis, Hormoz and Karun. The Kor River Basin, as an inland basin, is an important part of the freshwater Ichthyodiversity. Cheshmeh Gomban (Gomban spring) and its surrounding wetlands are important water sources of this basin and water bodies of the Tashk and Bakhtegan Lakes. In this study, the ichthyodive...
